Get Over Yourself

Writer's picture: Elizabeth Couture Elizabeth Couture

“I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.”

  • Psalm 139:14

Finding yourself, learning about your life’s purpose, seems a noble mission; yet taken into extreme obsession, distorts into egocentric narcism. American culture, especially amplified by the month of June with “pride month” (pride- top seven deadly sin), obsesses over individualism, identity, and self-created truths. Especially youth are bombarded by a kaleidoscope of flashing neon signs to, “say who you are”, “determine your own gender”, “your sexuality is your identity” and “follow your urges and desires, only what makes you happy matters.” Such artificial light blocks out the natural sunlight shining the message: “Created by a trinitarian love not to be alone, fully loved and known since conception.”

So much time and energy wasted on sexuality expressed through trivial pursuits like looks (haircut, clothing) and innovating pronouns (it, we, xi, etc).  As if a look or how others address you determines one’s value and existence on this earth.

Get over yourself.  Expand your horizons to community, not social media likes or followings, but true community. The kind of true authentic community that requires sacrificial love, such as honoring parents, serving partners, counseling friends, and  raising children.

So get over yourself. Your life, your body, your time, your talents, are not about you. You are something’s son/daughter, friend, significant other, parent, employee and support.  Rather than focus on WHO you are, rest in the love of WHOSE you are. So much more happiness found beyond the temporary and temperamental rainbow, into the vast sky, heavens and beyond when one is defined not by self, but by something beyond themselves.

“Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it.

  • Matthew 10:39
