39 weeks and 5 days my hubby and I take a leisurely stroll around our lil neighborhood. After joking with the neighbors about not wanting to have our son born on April Fools, we began the perfect pregnancy dinner- chocolate chip pancakes. I started contracting at 8pm every 5 minutes. From 0-60 in my shocked state- all I could think was “This has to be labor because if not I am never going to make It through this!” We delayed an hour- and arrived at our hospital by 10:00pm. By 10:30pm I was dilated 9 1/2 cm, by 11:30pm I was pushing, and by 11:57pm our 8 pound 14 ounce 20 something inch bundle of screaming joy squeezed out of my wa-who like some sort of sci-fi or fantasy film (which I saw in a mirror- such a crazy option!)
So in reflection on my way-too-easy first time birth:
1. When the nurse midwife at the doctors office commented “How are you 6 inches dilated and not in labor?“ that morning should have been a clue...
2. Quick labors mean no choices- not enough time for a water birth (they were still filling up the tub), or even an epidural- heck they barely had time to put in an IV and monitor
3. Shock is the perfect coping method for labor pain- since I couldn‘t believe this was happening I fell into almost a dream state.... as if I we’re watching myself give birth.
God has the greatest sense of humor for us fools- jokes on us with His incredible timing and planning!
